Mao's Furnace
In this episode, Ross explores the Great Leap Forward in China under Mao Zedong. Following a century that began with communist upheaval and industrial transformation in Russia, Chairman Mao sought to lead China through a a similar process of modernization, and met with disastrous results. One embodiment from this effort, the backyard furnace, stands as the perfect emblem of the denial and delusion that ultimately turned the Great Leap Forward into one of history's greatest leaps backward.
