Illustration: Experimenting with an Eclipse

I developed this illustration to go with a news story that we produced about how scientists at Berkeley Lab used the Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024 to run a unique experiment spanning the U.S. on how removing the variable of solar radiation impacts gas fluxes and plant metabolisms.

This image required a cool synthesis of human and AI tools- I used Midjourney to compose the landscape, traced it into Adobe Illustrator, used Illustrator's generative vector tool to create the eclipse's corona, then integrated the hand-drawn tower into the image by grouping all the elements of the foreground and layering them above it. I then created a mask over the center of the image and used Illustrator's generative recolor tool to create a twilight palette to capture the transient effect of the eclipse in the middle of the day.

Illustrated Cover Art for Nature Climate Change

My colleagues at Berkeley Lab were invited to submit cover art for their paper showing that arctic wetlands have been emitting more methane as the summer makes growing seasons longer
With no suitable photos, I developed this retro-modern illustration (and an alternate version) to capture a sense of languid late summer warmth, while positioning the viewer deep in the overgrown vegetation to give a sense of teeming growth. I also included the two main scientific instruments used to collect these data: gas flux chambers and eddy covariance towers.

Videos

I developed the idea for this explainer video, then wrote the script, storyboarded, and worked with an external studio to animate this video for the Molecular Foundry.
